MILLENNIUM SPORTS AND RECREATION PROJECT
Now that summer and the holidays are behind us the Project Team are gearing up for a busy period of renewed fund-raising effort (watch out for publicity information around the village on a range of activities which you can join in) and hopefully to a start on site sometime in the Spring of next year.
Project funds now stand at £162,328 towards a total project cost of £699,000.
Successful grant bids have been made to a number of charitable trusts which has helped to boost the partnership funding which is now in place to support the application to Sport England. This is to be considered by Sport England in October.
This application hopefully will secure over half of the total project funds and we are quietly optimistic that this will be successful although clearly there are no guarantees at this time. There remains much work to do but we are determined that the project will succeed. The new Pavilion including changing rooms, disabled access and a meeting room together with the new football pitch, additional tennis court and multi sports area are much needed in the village and will particularly bring benefit to the younger members of the community.
Millennium Project Bonds
If you have not already done so and would like to help raise money for the project the Project Bond scheme is still available. This enables you to provide a 10 year interest free loan to the project which will be of vital assistance in reaching our overall total. Contact Chris Rothwell for more information.
Sunflower Competition
Winners of the tallest Sunflower competition are:
1 st: Tim Reynolds 202cm; 2 nd : Daniel Knight 201cm, 3 rd : Adam Burchill 193cm.
This helped to raise over £200 for the project and raise the profile across the village.
Our planning is now beginning to turn to how the facilities will be managed and operated and as part of this work we are keen to raise further the profile and to give some focus to the project once it is up and running.
Children's 'Design a Logo Competition'
To give us some ideas for a logo for the facility, children of any age are invited to enter this competition and a prize of a £50 sports voucher will be given to the entry which is selected to help in the design of the logo. What better way to occupy the children during the half term holiday! What to do: On an A4 sheet of paper a design to be submitted with name, address, telephone number and age clearly written on the reverse to Mr C Rothwell, Willow Green Cottage, Bell Hill, Hook Norton, Banbury, Oxfordshire OX15 5NG. Closing date 26 October. Entries can include pictures and words. The final logo will be professionally designed and will be used on promotional items for the project.
Car Wash Scheme
This will start again at the Sports and Social Club on Saturday 6 October from 9.00am to 11.00am. Last year this raised over £2000. Keep your car smart and clean this winter for just £3 a wash. Please spread the word.

Outstanding successes over the last few years have resulted in the following:

2001/2002
Promoted to Hellenic League
(1st Division-West)
..... unbeaten to date .....

In the last edition of the Newsletter I reported the sense of achievement and pride felt by the Club, following the acceptance of the First Team into Division 1 (West) of the Cherry Red Records Hellenic League and the acceptance of the Second Team into Division 2 (West) of that League's Reserve Section. Since that time the First Team has played five matches, four of which have been away from home and has recorded five magnificent victories. What a wonderful start, exceeding all the expectations of even the most optimistic and ardent 'Hooky' supporters!
Congratulations so far therefore, should be extended to Dave Risato, Steve Slaughter and all the players who have been involved. Already the value of the large, skilful and experienced squad is showing dividends. In this respect, the necessary existence of a second team, itself playing at a higher level also, should provide a source of predominantly younger players to challenge for first team football. The second team is being managed by Keith Wise who is being assisted by Adrian White. To date, the 'Seconds' have played only one match which resulted in a narrow defeat two weeks ago to Wantage Town.
Whether it be the First or Second Team, their respective management, as well as the players themselves are dependent upon efficient and hardworking 'back room' staff to function effectively. In this respect the Club is fortunate to have the 'hands on' assistance of its Vice Chairman, Mike Barlow, together with the energy and experience of Secretary Dave MacFarlane and not forgetting the 'know how' and 'on the job' attention of Head Groundsman, Neville Pearce. With the help of others, the backroom team has also worked tremendously hard and the success so far of the First Team in particular, has gone a long way to compensate for this hard work. Notwithstanding the apparent effectiveness of the support staff, the Club would gratefully accept help towards the various tasks which are necessary on home match days and in this respect I appeal to anyone so interested to make contact with Dave MacFarlane (Tel: 01608 737123) or myself (Tel:01608 737476).
Finally, on behalf of the Club, I must thank publicly our Chairman, Chris Moore of the Tourex Foundation, together with the Hook Norton Brewery Company Ltd and Cotswold Carriers for their invaluable sponsorship. Additionally the Club is grateful to the many businesses and individuals, too many to mention, who have so generously provided additional sponsorship, either through the programme or match day sponsorship. This kind of support, whilst being financially helpful, is a great incentive to both teams to do well on the field. Thanks to all of you and thanks also to our supporters for their loyal attendance on match days and their encouragement in other ways as well.
Please continue to give us your support; you never know, we may achieve promotion in our first season in the new League!!
Geoff (“Jesse”) James

HOOK NORTON CRICKET CLUB
The end of another enjoyable season of cricket! It's been a year of great improvements up at the ground, especially the facilities for the Juniors. The new artificial wicket was laid at the start of the season, courtesy of a major anonymous donation backed up by a grant from Sports England. It made a big difference to the number of games played at all the junior age groups and we look forward to the next year for the year-on-year improvement in their cricket. A BIG thank you to Paul White and Steve Belcher in particular for their efforts at co-ordinating the junior cricket. All the helpers, getting too numerous to mention individually I'm pleased to say, mean that cricket is truly an activity for the whole village. We hope that even more of you will be up there to enjoy the sunshine next summer.
Dickie Knight did an excellent job in his first year as captain of the midweek team, an ideal way for the senior and junior players to come together for a short evening game.
The Sunday XI had a much improved season under the guidance of Paul White. It is great to see everyone improving their skills and enjoying the game. So much so that we are strongly considering putting in a Saturday Second XI under the captaincy of Keith Pashley for the 2002 season. It is a significant commitment from the club and so we hope we had a good attendance at the AGM on Friday 28 th of September at the Sports and Social Club. Whether we go forward will have been decided by a straight vote on the night.
The first XI had a good first season in the Premier division being just pipped for third place and finishing fourth ahead of last year's Premier Division champions. Looking forward to next season we have a major new sponsor for the cricket club. Kumala Wines are sponsors for the 2002 season so we will be aiming to improve further on this years excellent start in the Premier Division. Any players out there wanting to join us for next season please get in contact (especially another batsman and a spin bowler!). There's indoor cricket in December, January and February and indoor nets in February, March and April - hope to see you there.
Please contact Tim Lunel or Colin Scarrett.
