ST PETER'S TOWER PROJECT
The kitchenette and toilets, including the baby changing facilities have now been completed and are already proving to be a considerable asset. The glass screen is due to be erected immediately after Remembrance Sunday and work on the disabled hoist will follow on soon afterwards. Permission to install the new clock mechanism has been applied for and this is likely to be installed early in the New Year.
Fund raising activities over the summer months have been very successful and the fund currently stands at just over £95,000. There is still quite a long way to go to reach the target of £140,000, but there are a number of activities planned for the coming months. The first of these is the Messiah from Scratch, which will take place on the weekend of 29/30 th September. Rehearsals for the choir of well over 100 will take place on the Saturday, with the performance on Sunday at 7.00pm. Tickets (£5) are available from Emma Callery and Simon Mead.
On 1st October Jo Chadwick launches her special video which explores Hooky around 2000 and could be a good companion for the village Millennium book and a present for distant friends and relatives. Proceeds go to the Tower Project.
Betcha Like Betjeman , readings from John Betjeman's poems and singing of some of his favourite hymns will take place on Sunday 28 th October at 4pm in St. Peter's. The annual Craft Fair, a firm favourite for starting the Christmas shopping, will take place on Saturday 3 rd November and will incorporate the Grand Christmas Draw. On the 23 rd November a session of the popular panel game 'Call my Bluff' will take place; see the village notice boards for details.
In the New Year there are a number of activities planned, including a Valentine's Murder Night, a return visit by The Gwalia Singers from Swansea, a Golf Day, a concert by The Cotswold Chamber Choir and a Donkey Derby in conjunction with the Sports & Social Club. Details of all these activities will be available shortly.
If you would like to make a personal donation to the Tower project, please contact either Keith Fowler or John Wheatley.

C 2000       A unique review on video of the village and its events around the Year 2000.

This is not a diary as before but covers all aspects of the village, the spiritual, the natural, the fund-raising and also interesting events over the last few years:
- gorgeous pictures of our Hooky children and other inhabitants
- beautiful seasonal views
- activities within the village
This video has been specially done to raise money for the Church Tower Project. It will be available from the Post Office and Village Shop at a cost of £8.50 from October 1st. It could be sent to distant friends and relatives to show them what the village is like today.
If you would like to help promote the video why not have a coffee morning? I could provide you with a demonstration video and copies for sale.

HOOKY PLAYERS
Rehearsals for the pantomime Robin Hood and The Babes in the Wood have now commenced. Musical direction will be by Roger Gooding, choreography by Polly Rose and overall production and direction by Brian Rider. There are twelve principals and six children in the cast, but more singers for the chorus are still needed as are backstage helpers. The dates for the show are Friday 31 January, 1 & 2 February 2002 . Because of the demand for tickets for our last production the pantomime will be box-office only. Watch this space for more details and notice of when tickets are available.

FILM SOCIETY
Our season started on 29 September with The Matrix . This will be followed on October 13th by Beau Travail (France 1998 Cert 15). This is directed by Clair Denis and is really a hymn to the beauty and sensuality of the male body masquerading as a film about the Foreign Legion!
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (China/Taiwan/USA 2000) hits our screen on November 3rd. Ang Lee directs this oriental tale of pursuit and revenge; his star Zhang Ziyi, is pretty and pretty deadly as the 'empowered woman'. Fantastic special effects.
Boys Don't Cry (USA 1999 Cert 18) will be shown on November 24th . Kimberly Pierce directs this movie about gender switching, based on real happenings in Nevada that ended in murder.

FESTIVAL OF FINE ALES
We will be hosting our annual Donations Evening on Thursday 11th October at the Visitor Centre at Hook Norton Brewery. We will be provided with fine ales and nibbles courtesy of Hook Norton Brewery and we will be distributing the money we raised this year.
It gives us the opportunity to thank those without whom the Festival would not run, so, if you were in any way involved with the running of the Festival, we expect you there and for those of you who supported the festival by attending, it's your opportunity to come along and say thank you and have a few more beers at the same time.

HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND
On July 21st, in light rain and with heavy clouds threatening more, (which fortunately did not materialise), a full band assembled outside the Pear Tree Inn to play for the Hook Norton Beer Festival. Starting off with a rousing march, a full programme of music was played to a large appreciative audience, concluding with the impressive "Finale from Faust".
At the end of July on a hot Sunday afternoon the Band were engaged at Garth Park, Bicester. In the welcoming shade of the bandstand the band were able to provide a lovely programme to the many visitors relaxing in the shade of the various trees growing in the beautiful surroundings.
On August 5th the Band gathered in the superb gardens of "Temple Close", Sibford Gower. In sunshine and a light breeze the band played a programme of music to the sixty guests who had come for tea and entertainment. The music was well received and with Vera's warm hospitality, there were many smiling faces at this annual event.

There was an unexpected treat in store for shoppers in Castle Centre on Sunday August 12th when the Band played there instead of Spiceball Park. A Seaside Event that had been planned was cancelled because of wet weather. Interaction between the Musical Director and the Council's Leisure Services during the morning resulted in a last minute decision to find a new venue. The Band was redirected on arrival and despite the 11th hour changes they looked smart and impressive in their maroon and gold tunics. Many shoppers stopped to listen and the fully prepared programme under the baton of Ron Glynn was well received.

A small Band, by request, played in the pleasant venue of Colonel and Mrs Holloway's garden in Hook Norton on September 1st. Seated in a small marquee the Band played a programme of light music as guests arrived, the sunny weather adding to the English Garden Party atmosphere. "A Hunting We Will Go" the Colonel's regimental march was one of the pieces asked for and played, as was "The Old Roast Beef of England" when it was time for guests to make their way into a huge marquee to dine. After a short interval for refreshment the Band continued to entertain their audience until the end of the afternoon.
