After the great success of the gig evening held last year, we are holding another free Spring Gig night on Friday 28th March at the Sun Inn.
The evening is the 'launch event' for the 2008 Music at the Crossroads and will include some great local acts, advance tickets for M@C 12 as well as hearing how some of the money raised from 2007 was used in the village.
Watch the website and the local notice boards and lamp posts for more news and full band line up.
M@C12: Saturday 5th July 2008
In case you haven't heard the fantastic news yet about M@C12 - the headline act is ………
The Manfreds

Since The Manfreds re-formed in 1991, they have been in constant demand throughout the World…understandably considering the number of top ten hits they had, not only with The Manfreds, but also individually. 2008 will be no different, with a tour of USA in the spring, followed by a tour of Australia and then the UK tour of their highly acclaimed 'Maximum Rhythm 'n' Blues' show which features The Manfreds. Just some of their hits include:
The Manfreds:  5-4-3-2-1, Sha la la, Do Wah Diddy, If You Gotta Go, Go Now, Pretty Flamingo, Semi-Detached Suburban, Ha Ha! Said The Clown, The Mighty Quinn.
Paul Jones Solo: High Time
Mike d'Abo Compositions: Build Me Up Buttercup (recorded by The Foundations), Handbags & Gladrags  (recorded by Chris Farlowe, Rod Stewart & The Stereophonics).
Check out their website and hear their hits on: www.themanfreds.com

While we have a top class act coming to Hooky, which will attract more people from further a field, we want to make sure the village have priority for tickets. So this year we will be offering advance tickets at a reduced price for the village residents, for a limited time before the event. More details in the next newsletter.

HOOKY PLAYERS
By the time you read this, our fourteenth production of Beauty and the Beast will have receded into history. Early signs are that the show, at this time of writing, is going to prove as popular as ever, with tickets sales going well. Director Richard Wheelton seems very satisfied with the cast, and Musical Director Cate Whitehead is, I know, delighted with the music. She is also working very hard with the dancers having taken over the choreography at very short notice. The dancers themselves are well aware that time is short and are putting every effort in to learn their three dances. The cast is very strong, with two new people taking lead roles, Karen Smith and James Rooney. These, together with some of our village favourites, will ensure another successful pantomime.
We would like to thank all the local businesses who have helped in putting this production together; The Sun Inn for allowing us to use the Function Room for rehearsals, Wacky Wardrobes for providing costumes and Best Computer Training, Cotswold Carriers, Christophers Chauffeurs and Home Computer Assist for sponsoring the Pantomime programme.
Our next production is scheduled for June and will be 'The Haunting of Hill House' - again directed by Richard Wheelton. Some of you may have seen the film and know that it is an out and out thriller. More details at a later date.
Thank you for your continued support. Brian Rider, Chairman Hooky Players

Many thanks to all who attended both our Autumn Concert & our Christmas Carol Concert on the 1st December - 2007 was the first time we have performed our Carol Concert in Hook Norton - thankfully it was a resounding success - the sum of £458.00 being kindly donated by the audience - we promise next year we won't run out of Mince Pies !!!! Christmas is always a busy period, engagements at the Katherine House "Lights of Love" service, Tesco's Store, Banbury Shopping Centre, The Roebuck Inn @ Drayton (Village Carols), Katherine House Hospice & Glebefields Nursing Home @ Drayton - December flashed by - all very enjoyable & adding that special "Magic" to this time of year.

SUDDENLY IT SEEMED LIKE CHRISTMAS
St. Edmund's Church, Shipston, was filled to capacity for the concert given by Stour Singers with 'Caliche', the South American Folk Group. on 8th December 2007. The programme began with the 'Misa Criolla' written by the Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez in 1963. It was one of the first Roman Catholic Masses to be set in Spanish following the Vatican ruling to allow celebration of the Mass in the vernacular. The 'Kirie' opened with gentle chords struck on solo mandolin, the choir humming beneath the tenor soloist, but in the 'Gloria' and 'Credo' the audience reacted to the unexpected energy of the rhythms and the singing. The work ended with a quietly beautiful plea: 'Danos la paz' – 'Give us peace'.
There followed a set of European carols from the choir, and traditional carols for audience accompanied by Rachel Bird at the piano. The second half opened with five carols from the Andes which Caliche sang with zest (simultaneously playing charangos, guitars, mandolins, panpipes flutes, ocarinas and a host of Andean percussion,) to audience acclaim. Stour Singers maintained this mood joining Caliche in a lively performance in Spanish of Ramirez:Navidad Nuestra, a moving Folk Nativity composed as a companion piece to the Misa. The evening came to a joyous close with Peruvian favourites, a standing ovation for Caliche and the choir – and suddenly it seemed like Christmas.
Stour Singers next concert - a performance of Mozart's Requiem and Haydn's Mariazeller Mass – will be on Saturday 10th May 2008 in St. Edmund's Church.
If you would like to sing in this concert: rehearsals start at 7.30pm on Thurs 10th January 2008 at Shipston Primary School. No auditions. Please contact Vic Twyman for further details. Visit the website at stoursingers.org.uk

THE THEATRE – PLAYS IN FEBRUARY & MARCH
After my review of past plays in the last issue it has been suggested some thoughts on future productions may be helpful.
Well 2008 has plenty of choice beyond the Pantomime season – although I hope you saw the Hooky Player's “Beauty & the Beast”!
In February the Oxford Playhouse has a well-reviewed Alan Ayckbourn adaptation of Sheridan's “A Trip to Scarborough” – past & present writers of comedy par excellence! We are told there is a murderous major, a hapless heroine and a crusty father with a blunderbuss - not to mention a live band in fancy dress & an unexpected guest appearance of, for those of long, very long, memories, the fabulous Andrew Sisters!
More comedy, this time at Malvern in mid-February; with the incomparable Felicity Kendal as a glamorous socialite in the glittering decadence of late 1920s London. What else but a Noel Coward play - “The Vortex”?
I look forward to seeing it as it is the sole Coward play that didn't make me laugh when I saw it, some years ago - the reason being that on the way to the theatre I lost my wallet, money & credit cards!
At Cheltenham's Everyman Theatre there is a revival of Terence Rattigan's “The Deep Blue Sea” starring Greta Scacchi. A powerful play by a master dramatist (25th Feb – 1st Mar) dealing with passion & loyalty.
Finally in both months – at Northampton's Theatre Royal & then Oxford's Playhouse, there is an intriguing play by Sarah Ruhl – a writer new to me – but starring the incomparable Patricia Hodge. It is called “The Clean House” & seems to involve a battle between Doctor Patricia, who wants a clean house and her Brazilian cleaner who is not of the same mind!
Although not on my list, I should mention, for those who recall Coventry's Blitz, that in March there is a play at The Belgrade Theatre Coventry called “One Night in November”. This is the story of one family's harrowing experience of that night.
Good play-going.
John Wheatley
