HOOK NORTON SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB
2002 membership is now due. The fee is £10 per year adults or £20 for a family. If you are not a member, why not join? Membership entitles you to reduced rates when hiring the club for private functions and free entry to various events. There are several family discos already planned, and the Millennium Ball and Children's Party will take place in June.
The Saturday family night will start again on February 9th with a family disco, members - free, guests £3. This once successful family evening is short of volunteer bar staff for the rota. If you are willing to help, please contact Sheena Maule (730140) or Paul Pickering (737434).
On the sporting side there is junior football and cricket and tennis for all ages. The adult tennis club is thriving and Hook Norton Harriers meet every Tuesday evening. The senior football teams are still going from strength to strength.
Finally, it was time for Joan and Windsor Mathews to hang up the mop and broom after 20 years cleaning the club. They were presented with a thank you gift for all their hard work at the well attended whist drive they organise every week.
Chairman: Paul Pickering: Secretary: Sheena Maule: Treasurer: Colin Scarrett

HOOK NORTON FOOTBALL CLUB
The mood, as I pen these notes in the 2 nd week of January, is somewhat dismal. The euphoria and expectation which, not surprisingly, surrounded the magnificent 13 match unbeaten start to our first season in the new league has subsided a trifle in the wake of two recent defeats at the hands of Ardley United and arch rivals Chipping Norton Town. Despite this 'coming down to earth', all is by no means lost. The remainder of the season beckons and Hooky's prospects can be very rosy indeed. The 1 st Team remains top of the table and reached advanced stages in both the RPM Records Supplementary Cup and the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. The forthcoming match in the latter competition provides Hooky with an early opportunity to 'put the record straight' and I'm sure they will. Manager, Dave Risato, remains committed to the causes of obtaining promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division at the first attempt and winning some cup silverware that can be proudly displayed at the Bourne. At the moment, his ingenuity and tactical awareness are being tested to the limit as he wrestles with an ever-mounting injury list to key players. The Committee is totally confident of his ability to see the job through to the season's end with a wonderfully successful outcome. It is up to all players (both the 1 st & 2 nd Teams), officials and supporters to get behind him to help secure the success for which 'Rizzy' so passionately strives.
Keith 'Wizzy' Wise's 2 nd Team continues to perform competently in the Reserves' section of the same League. Both he and assistant, Adrian White, should be congratulated, not only on this achievement (against a background of ever changing player availability), but also on their cooperation and willingness to provide 'their' players for 1 st Team duty, when required. Keep up the good work lads. You and the 2 nd Team are a much valued resource in our Club which must continue to pull together if we are to strive for greater things at all levels of the 'wonderful game' in our Village.
The question of where and at what level the 1 st Team may be playing next season will be dependent, of course, upon whether or not it obtains promotion. The next part of the season is going to be crucial in deciding the 1 st Team's fate and by the time the next Newsletter is published the situation ought to be a little clearer. The Committee is busy considering various options, working closely with the Sports and Social Club- particularly in relation to the application to Sport England, so that it may be ready and able to react positively at the end of the season, according to the demands of the playing situation attained.

HOOK NORTON CRICKET CLUB
Calling all Umpires! We are very keen to secure an umpire for our Oxfordshire League games. Can anyone help?
For an afternoon in the sun (guaranteed for 2002!) there is a fee of £18 paid by the League. If finance is an issue, the Club would also be willing to consider additional top-up funds. Please don't be shy in coming forward – you'll be welcomed with open arms!
Also any players out there wanting to join us for next season please get in contact (especially another batsman and a spin bowler!). Indoor nets for the seniors start at 6-7pm on Sunday 17 th February and run through March and April. Now is a great time to come and meet the players at the club - hope to see you there.
Please contact Tim Lunel or Colin Scarrett

HOOK NORTON SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB - SPORTS PROJECT
The Project Committee is well on course to secure a £410,809 grant from Sport England. A meeting in December with representatives of the Lottery Fund was very positive. An Action Plan is now being developed to achieve Sport England's requirements that the new pavilion (stage 1 of the building programme) should also include construction of new social facilities, originally intended to be in Stage 3. This will involve additional cost that may be partly offset by the main football elements of the Project being funded by a Football Foundation grant, for which an application will be made shortly. We are now actively pursuing further funds and are developing the design to try to include additional social facilities within this phase of the project.
Further grant applications totalling £167,000 have been submitted to help raise additional funds. The Foundation for Sport and the Arts have also advised us that the £55,000 grant application submitted last year will be considered in the next couple of months. There is still a long way to go to meet our targets and we would like to encourage even more families to support the project directly. This can be achieved by taking out a project bond; a 10 year loan to the project, details of which together with an application form are printed overleaf.
The Project Committee has now to address some sensitive issues arising from the development of the Project, mainly as a consequence of Sport England's views expressed at the December meeting and of the Football Club's success. Some of these issues revolve around car parking and congestion on The Bourne and the Committee has taken steps to try to ease any problems.
The Project Committee is researching satisfactory solutions to these issues and will require a review of the planning permissions granted by Cherwell District Council. Sport England's encouragement to develop a larger pavilion will require redesign and further planning permissions.
These issues have persuaded the Committee to review the location of each element of the project to try and improve site design and control escalating costs. The review also includes consideration of the new league requirements that will be imposed on the Football Club if they achieve promotion one further step up the Football League pyramid.
Any changes that come out of this review will follow discussion with the sports clubs and appropriate planning applications
The Committee is aware that, in solving one issue, new issues may arise. However we hope the village will continue to support the project as it aims to provide facilities for all sections of the community, not just those that play sport.
In this regard many social events are planned and are included in the village rolling calendar. If you have any questions please contact:
Mike Barlow 01608 737336, Rebecca Watts 01608 730568 or Chris Rothwell 01608 730837.

Help provide new community sports and recreation facilities
TAKE OUT A BOND IN 2002
The Hook Norton and North West Cherwell Millennium Sports and Recreation Project is raising funds to improve the sports and recreational facilities in Hook Norton. Facilities will include football, tennis, multi sports and a new pavilion with social facilities to provide a meeting place for groups in the local community. We have applied for lottery funding and hope to secure over £410,000 from Sport England, but we still need to raise some of the money ourselves.

What is a bond? A bond is an interest free loan or donation to the club. You can take out a bond for £50, £100, £200 or £500 (or a larger amount of your choosing). On paying into the bond you will become a Vice-President of the club. If you opt to loan, you will be entitled to repayment of the monies in 10 years. You don't have to take the money back, you can leave it with the club which will be of even greater benefit to the development of facilities.

If you are interested in taking out a bond, please print and complete the form below and return to Chris Rothwell at the address shown or any other member of the committee. We need to have our commitments in place by Easter 2002.

Millennium Project Response Slip
I would be willing to be awarded a Millennium Project Bond.
