Once again we have had a busy couple of months.
October started off with our special day on the 2nd dedicated to Colin Scarrett. It was a perfect evening with many attending – Chris Rothwell gave a fitting tribute speech before receiving, on behalf of the club, a beautiful carved bench from Mary, which sits beside Colin’s tree overlooking the cricket pitch at the front of the new building. Friends and family shared their memories before raising a glass in the club house. Thanks to Jackie and Paul and Stephen Warner for making sure the tree was in place for the night, to Mary and Mark, and all who attended.
The following evening we enjoyed the cricket dinner at the club, which was a fantastic night, and on the Sunday we played host to the first of three tennis tournaments. With all this on top of the many football games for both senior and junior football, the club has been a very active place.
The end of the month was celebrated in style with our Halloween Family Night – thanks to everyone for joining us for a great evening. Pudsey bingo was a huge success, raising well over £100 on the night. With games and competitions continuing through the week, we hope to send a tidy sum to this very worthy charity – thanks to everyone who has supported us.

Sunday 20 December will bring the third running of the ‘Hooky Christmas Canter’. This is a six-mile run over road and fields and open to runners of all abilities. Each finisher will receive a hot mince pie and drink (either a glass of mulled wine or a hot ‘cuppa’).
Proceeds from the race will go to the Hook Norton Sports and Social Club to help fund further improvements to the facilities.
Last year’s race was well attended and a good time was had by all!

The fortunes of most, if not all football clubs (at whatever level) tend to fluctuate season by season for a combination of reasons, usually to do with managerial personnel, players and/or finance. So, the hard time that Hooky is currently experiencing, as highlighted in my article in the last Newsletter, is nothing new. In fact, it could be argued, that it is a necessary incursion into the otherwise smooth running of a club since it can combat complacency, thereby obliging club officers and others to remain focused on the job in hand and to be always looking to the future. As I have said to my colleagues on more than one occasion in the past when one of our teams has had a disappointing result, ‘Wouldn’t it be boring if we won all the time? Don’t forget it’s the losers who create the winners and it’s only through losing that you can truly experience the joy of winning.’
Suffice it to say that both of our teams are continuing to experience tough times in their respective divisions. Indeed, the First Team stays rooted at the foot of the Premier Division, while the Second Team is faring only marginally better in Division 2 (West) and in various cup competitions that it has entered.
Rizzy and Boylo have already secured the services of a few experienced players in an attempt to improve the First Team’s situation and when these players are available, their presence undoubtedly makes a difference. In recent matches, the Gallic flair of Eric Laborieux has been most influential and, in addition to his playing ability (he has previously played at Southern League level), our French import is a genuinely nice young man who has business interests in Cirencester. I suspect that the First Team’s eventual fate at the end of this season will depend on the regular availability or otherwise of Eric and the other experienced players who will, hopefully, not only perform well themselves but also encourage the other players around them to raise their game.
If this can happen, then perhaps our First Team will avoid the dreaded ‘drop’ into Division 1 (West) from which we fought so hard to gain promotion two seasons ago. Furthermore, the regular availability of some or all of these experienced players will also be beneficial to our Second Team by freeing up some of the more talented young players to perform at a level at which they are currently more used.
Without doubt, both teams can expect a very hard second half of the season but, as the old saying goes, ‘It’s not over until the fat lady sings’. So, please keep everything crossed and remember that, at Hooky, we don’t give up that easy.
Up the Hooky!
Results of the summer Banbury league matches
Hook Norton B team, captained by Paula Protherough, and the C team (captain Rebecca Watts) have both achieved top position in their leagues, meaning that they will go up to the 1st and 2nd divisions next year – congratulations to all who participated.

News from junior coaching
The Keith Davies junior tournament was held at the club on Wednesday 21 October. The players who took part were: Rob Gore, James Morris, Ben Ormshaw, Michael Philip and Dale Topley.
They all played short sets to four against each others, and the quality of tennis was very high, despite the cold and damp conditions.
The overall winner was Ben Ormshaw, who was presented with the Keith Davies trophy.
