Hook Norton and North West Cherwell Millennium Sport and Recreation Project

June and July saw lots of activity on project fundraising and progress with the Project Plan. Finally, after months of hard work by the Project Team, the Sport England Lottery Application has been submitted. Grant aid of £411,309 has been requested towards the total phase one capital cost of £699,459. Costs have gone up because of the increasing cost of building works, but also the project's VAT of nearly £100,000. It is hoped that this can be reclaimed through the formation of a company limited by guarantee, and work is ongoing to establish this.
Charitable Trusts have donated £1,200 towards the project and the Royal Bank of Scotland have donated £250. This follows other business support from the National Westminster Bank and Superchips (Buckingham).
Lots of events have taken place in the village and raised over £800 towards the project.
The Family Treasure Hunt and BBQ in the middle of June saw over 60 people searching out clues all over the village, finishing off with a BBQ and refreshments at the clubhouse.
A Safari Supper at the end of June joined five host kitchens and dining rooms and over 40 people for a night of good food, social gathering and fundraising. This was finished off at the clubhouse with strawberries and cream and the raffle draw.
July 1st saw the first Sunday Fun Day of sport on the sports field. A glorious summer day involved family races, bouncy castle, child friendly shot put and javelin, welly-wanging, family football competitions, speed tennis serving, frying pan tennis, parachute games, softball and badminton organised for young and old alike. Prizes were awarded for children and adult fun competitions and a great time was had by all. The Friends of Hook Norton School organised refreshments and were themselves able to raise over £60 for the school. It finished with a tug of war competition which included the Mums against Dads and children against adults.
Project implementation continues to move forward. A presentation to the Parish Council was made following concerns expressed about car parking, access and lighting. Careful design and limiting light operations will ensure that the level of intrusion is kept to a minimum. The floodlights will greatly enhance the availability of the facilities which are much needed in the village.
The Project Committee plan to organise targeted sessions for teenagers who have no other recreational facilities. Cherwell District Council Planning Committee approved the application in June.
A lot more fund-raising activity is planned. Watch out for the Race Night and also a special evening of Thomas Hardy. Discussions are also ongoing with the Fund-raising Committee for St Peter's Tower and joint events are planned in coming months.
The 2001 New Millennium Bond has also been launched. This is available to anyone who would like to help to raise funds by providing an interest free loan in the project for a 10 year period.
As always, anyone who would like more information about the project or would like to get involved in a fund-raising activity should contact either Mike Barlow or Chris Rothwell.

HOOK NORTON HARRIERS
Congratulations to Cecelia on beating her last years time for the 100 miles endurance race in California, twenty nine hours, forty minutes. We are sorry to lose this valuable member of the club as she is leaving the village to get married. Thanks Cecelia and Good Luck!
On Sunday 5th August it is our annual six mile race and fun run. Please come along and join us at the Sports and Social Club about 10.30am. Also please accept our apologies in advance for any inconvenience caused due to parking on the road during the race. The field we normally use for this purpose is out of bounds due to foot and mouth precautions.

HOOK NORTON FOOTBALL CLUB
The Club is delighted to report that for the second successive season, its First Team won the Championship of the Oxfordshire Senior League. Congratulations accordingly are extended not only to all players but also to the coaches, Dave Risato and Dickie Knight for this fine achievement. This success was extended by the excellent efforts of the Reserves who, under the guidance of Dave Deller, finished very commendably as Runners-up in the Reserves Section of this League. Well done to all the players and others connected with the Club; you have done “Hooky” proud!
Following on from this success, the Club is equally delighted to announce that its First Team has recently been accepted into the First Division of the Western Section of the prestigious Hellenic League for the forthcoming Season, thereby allowing the Reserves to compete in the League's Reserve Section. Whilst the excitement and expectation of playing at this higher level against clubs from as far away as Ross-on-Wye, Cirencester and the Swindon area are mounting by the day, the Committee is only too aware of the immense level of hard work and effort that will be required, not only by the players on match days and in practice, but also by everyone connected with the Club, to meet the enhanced playing standard and the facilities of this higher League. These facilities include improvements to the playing area and its immediate surrounds and also to the amenities in the dressing rooms. Against this background, the committee is presently seeking sponsorship and financial support from local businesses and individuals. The Club expects to make a nominal admission charge (to include the match day magazine) for all the First team home games to assist in meeting its quite substantial additional costs. Your support therefore, both vocal and financial, for the Club in the new season is actively sought and will be gratefully welcomed and appreciated.
On the actual playing side of things, the First Team will be managed by Dave Risato, who will not only be relying on a number of players from last Season's successful team but will also be seeking additional players to supply the vital depth and experience required at this higher level. Good luck to Dave and to John Hughes, who is returning to the Club to take charge of the reserves and not least, good luck to all the players.
At the time of going to print it is believed that the opening First Team match will be on Saturday 18th August, probably away at as yet an unknown venue. If this is the case, the opening home match for the First team is likely to be at The Bourne on Saturday 25th August. Details of these fixtures and any pre-season friendlies will be displayed around the village when they are known. Watch this space and other spaces around the village.
Geoff (“Jesse”) James
