HOOK NORTON SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB

Hi again - what a busy couple of months we have had at the club , firstly thanks to all who attended another fab night with the Blue Meanies and to all that have supported the quiz and Nobby’s Cheltenham race day on Friday 13th. Well done to everyone who came to Red Nose Bingo and ‘Picked your nose’, we raised £73.00 from the night which has been sent to this very worthy charity.

HOOK NORTON CRICKET CLUB

Spring is in the air – or it is as I write this piece! We’ve started rolling the wicket in preparation for this year because we know that it is going to be a hot dry one! What better way to spend a sunny summer afternoon than playing cricket, or watching your children enjoying the game. This season will be our first based out of the fantastic new club house and we want to make it one that we will remember.

We have been given the honour of staging the premier final in the Oxfordshire Cricket league this year at the end of August, the Airey Cup. It’s one we won 3 years ago and we are would dearly like to repeat that this year. But there’s a lot of cricket between then and the start of May where we get under way in earnest for both junior and senior sections. We know there a couple of talented cricketers who have moved into the village (no names mentioned …..yet!) so we hope to continue to build on the success of this thriving club.

Indoor nets will be continuing until the last week of April at Chipping Norton Leisure centre from 6-8pm. So dust off your whites, young or old we hope to see you up at the field over the summer.

HOOK NORTON (SENIOR SECTION) FOOTBALL CLUB

As I write this article on the print deadline date, it’s a glorious Spring-like day that is undoubtedly lifting my spirits, following yesterday’s defeats for both our First and Second Teams. Currently, the First Team is experiencing a lean spell with injuries and suspensions contributing to the situation whilst the Second Team, through no fault of its own, had its first match in six weeks due mainly to inclement weather and its effect on pitches. Nevertheless, with about six weeks of the season remaining we stay hopeful of both our teams finishing, at least, in mid-table positions on 1st May.

Tuesday evening coming, sees the First Team making the long trek to Hungerford to play The Crusaders in the Semi Final of the Floodlit Cup. Since our opposition on that occasion are currently the runaway leaders of the Hellenic Premier Division, we are under no delusions that we face a somewhat daunting task to progress to the Final of that competition but, rest assured, we will give it our best shot despite the length of our injury list!

If you don’t already know, the First Team were defeated in the Quarter Final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup by Southern League Premier Division Banbury United a week or two back, when we put up a very creditable performance against our more senior opponents but lost out to a goal with only two minutes to go in extra time. The match was watched by over 200 spectators and, in this respect, the club was extremely grateful to the Surgery and to farmer John Harris for kindly making overflow parking areas available on this occasion when both Archie Bullard and I had the opportunity of putting our past constabulary skills in traffic regulation to good use!

Finally, with the end of season fast approaching, it is time once again to thank everyone who has supported and encouraged us in so many ways. Without such support and encouragement it would be a pointless exercise on our part. For our part, we trust that we have given you enjoyment over the course of the season when, as always, we have done our best to fly the flag not only for the Football Club and the Sports & Social Club but also for Hook Norton itself and its surrounding area. In particular, we thank Colette and Kerrie for their unstinting efforts, on our behalf, in the clubhouse at all our home matches.

Please don’t forget that the End of Season Presentation Evening be held on Saturday 16th May, 7.30pm for 8.00pm at the Clubhouse there will also be a buffet and music. The cost is £10 per person; tickets from Colette and Kerrie or from Club Secretary Garnet Thomas. Up the Hooky!
